When hybrids first appeared on the market, long irons started to disappear from the golf bags of virtually all club golfers and to some extent the bags of tour players as well. Hybrids were so much easier to use, so much more versatile, and so much easier to launch high for soft landing approach shots that the use of long irons started to become pointless. Over the past few seasons though, the long iron has made something of a resurgence in the form of the driving iron as advances in technology has made them an altogether more appealing option. Virtually all driving irons are now constructed to have a hollow head creating much more margin for error, vastly superior ball speeds, and far more versatility than before.
TaylorMade have been at the forefront of pushing the design of the driving iron forwards, and each season brings new and improved models with a design and play characteristics to suit all levels of golfer. The P790 UDI has always been their model that is aimed at the better player, and features a far sleeker head than both the SIM UDI and the SIM DHY. The new 2021 P790 UDI builds on the success of its predecessor and the new head design offers a piercing ball flight that is ideal for tight tee shots where a combination of good distance are control are required.
TaylorMade have re-engineered the SpeedFoam that fills in the inside of the otherwise hollow head. Called SpeedFoam Air, it is 69% lighter than in previous models and saves up to 3.5g of weight that has been redistributed to optimise mass for better launch conditions. It has also improved the acoustics and feel at impact, with contact with the ball providing a wonderfully solid feel and a sound that is music to the ears. The Speedfoam Air inners, also always for the clubface to flex more at impact helping to create class leading ball speeds and shots that will travel far down the fairway.
Constructed from 8620 carbon steel, the TaylorMade 2021 P790 UDI Golf Driving Iron has a thinner head in strategic locations which has allowed for an incredibly low CG placement. This has been paired with a 1.65mm forged 4140 steel L-Face and promotes supreme flexibility explosive ball speeds and distance whilst maintaining a premium feel. The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket also helps the flexibility of the face and helps to preserve ball speeds on low face strikes, which is by far the most common mis-hit on this style of club.
